Writing the /k/ Sound Spelling Words Review the /k/ sound rules with the students. It is important that students learn to break each word apart and recognize the letter or letters that make each sound in that word. Model for students the process of sounding out words to spell them. The spelling word kid has been used as a model. Read the word. (kid) Say the word aloud, breaking the word into sounds. (k d) Think of the letters that make each sound. “/k/ can be spelled with the letters c or k . I do not know which one to write until I hear the next sound. i . Because i is the next letter, then the /k/ sound must be spelled with the letter k . The last sound I hear is /d/. That is spelled with the letter d .” Write the word kid . Reread the word. (kid) On student page 12, have the students write the spelling words by breaking the words into sounds and writing the letters after they have said all the sounds of the word. If a word is too long for the students to remember all of its sounds, have the students write the letters as they sound them out. After they write each word, have the students reread each word to make sure it says what they want it to say. Your Words Have the students think of as many words as they can that follow the /k/ sound rules. This can be done as a class or group activity. Write the words the students say and discuss whether the words use the letters c or k .
