Place the words spelled with a k (kid, kind, keep, kite, kept, key**) into a pocket chart or on the board. Have the students discover what all the words have in common. The letter k comes before the letters i or e . Inform the students that the letter k is also used before the letter y . Introduce the words spelled with a c (can, clap, cash, cup, cook, cut*, come**, could**) in the same way. Have students discover what all the words have in common. The letter c comes before the letters a , o , u , or any consonant. Help students discover and discuss the /k/ sound spelling rules. Read with the students the spelling words and use each word in a phrase. Discuss the phrases if they are unfamiliar to the students. Have students expand on the phrases if possible. Remind the students that all syllables must have a vowel sound and that many syllables are either open or closed. In this unit, help the students discover that the words keep and cook are a different syllable type. This type of syllable has two vowels that make one sound or an unusual sound. They are vowel-pair syllables. Tell students that the word kite is another syllable type. It is a vowel-consonant- e word. When a vowel is followed by any consonant and then a silent e , the vowel usually makes a long sound. The word kind is an unusual word because it appears to be a closed syllable, but the vowel has a long sound. This happens occasionally with the vowels i and o that are followed by two consonants at the end of a word (cold, old, gold, most, wild, child, mild). Self-Assessment On student page 10, have students write the spelling words on the chart. Ask the students to write the words they already know how to spell in the green- light column. Words they can read but cannot spell are written in the yellow-light column, and words they cannot read or spell are written in the red-light column. This activity allows the teacher and the students to know which words need to be emphasized in this unit. Introduce the review words to those students who need reinforcement. The challenge words can be used for extra-credit. The challenge words in this unit follow the /k/ sound rules, but other letters in each word do not make their expected sounds. When the /k/ sound comes before the letters e, i, or y , it is spelled with the letter k . When the /k/ sound comes before the letters a, o, u , or any consonant, it is spelled with the letter c .
