It is important that students both say and hear the words many times. This activity will help the auditory learner. The activity can also be led by a student who reads the words. The teacher listens for verbal distortions of the words. Echo Game Using either the teacher or student set of spelling word cards, have the students sort the words into two groups. Tell students that one group of words has the /k/ sound spelled with the letter k and the other group has the /k/ sound spelled with the letter c . Have students discover why each group is spelled the way it is. This activity should lead to a discussion or review about the /k/ sound spelling rule. Sorting Words—Closed Sort Fold cardstock paper to form a stand. Using cut-up sentence strips, make several cards with the letter k and several with the letter c . Write the spelling words on sentence strips, leaving off the beginning letter. The students place the letter cards and word parts on the stand to make a spelling word. The students explain why they chose the letter k or the letter c to complete the word. Make a Word Discuss the multiple meanings of these spelling words: kid, kind, can, clap, cup, cook. Have students use these words in a story, using the same word for more than one meaning. Example: The kind kid clapped his hands when he heard the clap of thunder. He kidded his friend and said that kind of noise was made by a giant dinosaur. Multiple-Meaning Words in Stories Using the same cardstock stand as the Make a Word activity on this page, have students work with adding – s or – es to the spelling words. Write the spelling words on index cards and make several cards with – s and several with – es . Discuss with students that – s or – es is added to the end of a word to make it mean more than one (cups) or to match subject/verb agreement in a sentence (claps). The – es ending is used when words end in s , ch , sh , ss , or x . s and – es Reinforcement or Extension Activities for Use on Any Day These activities can be used on any day in any order. Many activities can be used for other units.
