Geography by Design uses a conceptual approach to align instructional units to instructional standards. The content is research-based, and the lessons are student-centered and scaffolded to maximize learning opportunities for students of all abilities. Geography by Design embeds activities and instructional strategies for differentiation for diverse learners, including English language learners as well as gifted and talented learners.
Volume 1 introduces students to the discipline of geography and the concept of thinking spatially. Students are challenged to analyze the world in which they live, beginning with their immediate surroundings, and understand the spatial distribution of goods and services. Volume 1 also introduces students to concepts about the physical processes and patterns of Earth and its systems as well as how human beings live in and interact with the natural world and are affected by tectonic activity, climate, soil deposition, the scarcity of fresh water, and the uneven distribution of natural resources.
