Plant Systems

by Region 4 ESC

Unlike the other lessons in the Teaching Biology with E’s series, this is not a single lesson on plant systems. It is a sequence-dependent series of three lessons that addresses the interactions that occur among systems that perform the functions of transport, reproduction, and response in plants. The Engage in each lesson uses the same image and the same approach to look at the plant systems through a different lens: first through transport; then response; and lastly, reproduction.

We realize that the entire series of three lessons may take a couple of days longer than you planned to cover plants. The goal is for students to master the content by building their own knowledge through the 5 E lesson model. Each lesson includes hands-on activities for students to explore before the content is introduced formally. Then in the Elaborate of each lesson, students examine real-world examples to make sense of the system interactions they investigated. Take the suggested time to allow students to investigate, build models, and apply their knowledge to real-world situations. The Evaluate in each lesson builds on content from the previous lesson so that by Lesson 3, students can evaluate their knowledge of all plant system functions.

By the end of this lesson, students should be able to answer these key questions:
  1. How do plant systems interact to perform the function of transport?
  2. How do plant systems interact to perform the function of response?
  3. How do plant systems interact to perform the function of reproduction?
